FRAME 089 — Act 4B.

The guard hit the threshold first, breath ragged, boots slipping for half a second on the polished floor before she caught herself. The silver-violet opening hummed around her like a living wound in the corridor, and the warm brass light of the real Marine Building waited on the other side.

Sten stayed inside the reflected hall long enough to make sure she was truly through. One hand was still lifted toward danger, the other half-turned toward the architect, every line of him saying go now.

The architect followed with his portfolio locked against his chest, moving like a man who still expected the world to turn liquid under his feet. When he crossed, the light ran over him in a shimmer, and the reflected prison let him go with visible reluctance.

For one brief, impossible beat, the rescue was real. The guard and the architect were out, alive, breathing, back in the proper corridor, while Sten remained in the wrong kingdom to cover the last few seconds himself.

Then The Moon stepped back. It was only a slight retreat, a soft drift of silver veils away from the seam, but the change in intention was instant and unmistakable.

The card vibrated somewhere beyond the threshold, calling her back, yet she did not return to it. Her wolves stayed close at her sides, and her luminous face never turned toward Sten again.

Sten saw it at once. He turned toward the opening so sharply that his dark hair shifted across his brow, and his eyes hardened with that cold, quick intelligence that always arrived a heartbeat before danger became fact.

The seam of light began to narrow. It did not slam shut like a door; it drew itself inward with awful elegance, as if the world were sewing its own skin closed from both sides.

✥

He ran. There was no panic in the movement, only clean, absolute decision, his Chelsea boots striking the mirrored floor in long controlled strides as the impossible corridor stretched around him.

The reflected kingdom answered by defending itself. A dark shape rose out of the floor and a wall at the same time, liquid-black and glass-bright, and The Glass Tenant stepped directly into Sten’s line to the shrinking exit.

Frame 094

FRAME 094 — Act 4B.

There was no time left for reading patterns or testing angles. Sten hit first with a brutal, efficient blow to the upper torso, and the impact landed for real this time, driving a visible distortion through the creature’s dark body.

The difference was shocking in its simplicity. In the reflected realm, the Tenant could be hurt, and Sten’s body understood that before his thoughts fully did.

✥

Frame 095

He followed with a spinning kick that was all control and economy, no wasted flourish, only precision sharpened by urgency. The strike broke the Tenant’s center and sent it staggering sideways in a scatter of black gleam and violet fracture.

Another hit came fast after that, short and savage, a finishing punctuation more than a duel. Sten dismantled the block in seconds, as if he were finally solving a problem that had mocked him for too long.

Then he opened his hand, and a circle of violet arcane fire drew itself beneath the Tenant’s feet. The flames did not erupt outward; they rose inward, closing in geometric lines around the creature until it held fast inside a burning trap.

Only then did Sten sprint again. The closing seam was little more than a vertical wound of light now, and he reached for it with his whole body thrown forward, shoulder, hand, and desperate timing all aimed at the same vanishing point.

✥

Frame 097

FRAME 097

FRAME 097 — Act 4B.

He was late by less than a second. His fingertips brushed the last trembling thread of silver-violet radiance, and then the opening was gone, leaving only cold surface and his own breath breaking hard in the hush.

Far away, seen almost like a memory caught in glass, The Moon continued to drift from him. She moved with her wolves in perfect ceremonial silence, and the refusal in that image hurt more than any blow the Tenant had landed.

The corridor changed after that. The air turned thinner, colder, and stranger, and the art deco lines of the reflected Marine Building seemed to lengthen into impossible distance, as if space itself had stopped agreeing with human measurement.

Sound went soft and wrong. His own breathing no longer seemed to belong fully to his chest, and each footstep felt like it arrived a fraction later than it should.

Then time bit. It began with a sudden weight in his face and throat, a sharp unfamiliar fatigue in the joints, as though invisible years had found him all at once and decided to stay.

Sten touched his own skin and felt it changing under his hand—not collapsing, not becoming grotesque, but thinning, tiring, bearing marks no battle had earned. His reflection in the dark wall gave the truth back without mercy.

More seconds passed, and more years came with them. New lines gathered around his eyes, his mouth, the strong frame of his face, while his body remained beautiful in outline and posture even as age began claiming it with quiet authority.

He refused to stand still for it. Violet fire burst from his ring and his open palm, lashing across wall panels, mirrored surfaces, and polished floor as he tried to crack the logic of the prison apart.

When magic failed to open it, he used force. He drove punches into the dark reflections, struck at the seams, shattered the surface into brief webs of bright fracture, and watched every single break start dying the moment it appeared.

The kingdom rejected him again and again. Cracks dimmed, reflections rippled, the floor re-smoothed, and every route he tried folded back into the same endless corridor.

FRAME 102 — Act 4B.

At last he stopped in the middle of it, chest rising and falling, shoulders tense, older now by a terrible, unreal measure. He understood, with a clarity sharp enough to hurt, that he was not getting out by his own strength.

It was not surrender. It was something colder, something cleaner—the acceptance a fighter gives the truth once denying it becomes more childish than brave.

Silence settled over him like deep water. No enemy rushed him, no dramatic collapse arrived, and that emptiness made the trap feel even crueler.

The tear came without warning. It slipped down his aged face in one clean line, not born from fear or humiliation, but from the simple, devastating fact of absence.

He was not mourning lost pride. He was mourning Han’s steady warmth, the quiet way comfort lived around him, and the thought that he would never again hear the softness in Han’s voice when the world finally let him rest.

He was mourning Søren too—the fierce loyalty, the sharp humor, the unspoken promise that Sten never had to stand alone unless he chose to. The reflected corridor seemed to widen around that realization, making room for grief the way it had made room for fear.

What hurt most was not that he loved them. What hurt was knowing how many times he had let that love remain implied, how often he had trusted them to understand without saying enough aloud.

FRAME 108 — Act 4B.

Beyond the prison of his failing time, The Moon was almost gone when the atmosphere shifted again. A second presence entered the space with no violence at all, and somehow that made it feel more absolute.

A masculine figure of silver magic stepped into the path of her retreat. He was beautiful in a way that almost refused language—broad-shouldered, perfect in line, undeniably male, undeniably strong—and yet no true face could be read from that radiance.

The wolves reacted first. They sat before him at once, no longer guardians of a wayward moon but obedient creatures before a higher authority.

Then the red light came. Runes unfurled from the figure like commands made visible, burning brighter than sunlight, brighter than fire, flooding the reflected realm with a sovereign warmth that no shadow dared challenge.

The Moon lowered her gaze. She did not argue, did not delay, did not so much as pretend she had a choice; she turned at once, silver veils now threaded through with solar red, and opened the portal again.

The reawakened threshold blazed into being, and Sten did not waste the mercy. He crossed through the reopened light and felt the stolen years fall away from him with each step, his body restoring itself to its proper age as the silver figure behind him dissolved into a lingering warmth.

The Moon returned to the card, but not unchanged. By the time Sten’s boots touched the real floor again, the old purple, black, and silver had been marked through with red seals that burned like the memory of a command still echoing through paper.

Outside, near midnight, the Marine Building rose behind him in wet gold and shadow, its entrance gleaming against the dark Vancouver street. Sten stood in the cool night air, breathing hard, the last of the unreality draining out of his body as relief settled into him too deeply for anything like a smile.

Frame 116

FRAME 116 — Act 4B.

He looked down at the altered tarot in his hand, at the red signs now written across The Moon, and for the first time since the fight began, he had no immediate answer. Whatever power had reached through that reflected prison to pull him back had not been his, had not been hers, and had left a mark that promised this story was far from over.
