A Small Distance

Kaeryn completes a short teleport into the preparation court beside his waiting hovercycle.

A blue-green fold of space drew shut behind Kaeryn, leaving a faint shimmer against the dark stone. He completed the short step with effortless balance, dark hair caught for an instant by the air it disturbed. His eyes were already on the hovercycle waiting across the preparation court. Its sculpted hull floated just above the paving, held by steady threads of ochre light. He crossed toward it, the last trace of his magic fading at his back.

Before the Ascent

Kaeryn sits on his hovering vehicle while a civilian technician watches from the gallery.

Kaeryn lowered himself into the saddle with the easy precision of someone who knew the machine’s shape by touch. His gloved hands found the grips; beneath his knees, the narrow hull held its quiet hover while ochre filaments glowed along its underside. The technician remained behind the railing, watching without a word. Kaeryn glanced toward the open span, where amber lamps led out over the crimson clouds, then leaned forward. The stillness before the ascent lasted one more breath.

Above the Span

Kaeryn rises above the suspended circuit; a lateral stone terrace lies below and to the right.

The hovercycle rose cleanly from the stone and carried him beyond the edge of the starting span. Kaeryn folded nearer to its sleek hull, his shoulders aligned with its forward line. Terraces stepped away beneath him; their lamps dwindled into points of amber above the rolling red cloudbank. Air pressed against his face as the architecture of Dravosk opened around him, monumental arches framing one stretch of sky after another. The vehicle answered his smallest movement, and he let it climb.

The Open Air

Kaeryn enjoys a steady flight alongside the monumental arches of Dravosk.

Wind streamed over Kaeryn’s bare arms and lifted his fair hair. He rode low, strong and supple through each change of line, letting his weight guide the hovercycle between the immense arches. Ochre light traced a steady path beneath the hull. A slight smile touched his striking face: for a few moments the machine, the air and his own quick balance seemed to move together. Amber-lit spans swept past, while the crimson clouds remained far below.

The First Break

A small interruption appears in the ochre levitation beneath the intact hull as Kaeryn braces.

The change began as a tremor beneath the saddle, small enough to mistake for rough air. Then one section of ochre light faltered and went dark under the intact hull. The hovercycle tipped. Kaeryn’s smile disappeared as he tightened both hands around the grips and shifted his weight to meet the lean. The polished lines of the machine still looked whole, but the lift no longer answered evenly. He steadied his breathing and searched for the balance that had been there an instant before.

Beyond the Edge

The hovercycle descends outside the elevated track with Kaeryn still at the controls.

The stone span climbed past his shoulder as the hovercycle slipped beyond its edge. Kaeryn braced through his arms and drew the controls toward him, trying to raise the nose. The response came too slowly. Air rushed along the hull; the ochre glow beneath it broke into uneven lengths. His lean body stayed close to the saddle, every movement deliberate despite the drop. Above him, the terrace and its railing receded. Below, crimson cloud swallowed the distance he had hoped to cross.

Still Holding On

Close view of Kaeryn’s focused face and both gloved hands gripping the controls.

Kaeryn kept both gloved hands on the grips. He eased one control, corrected the other and waited for the lost lift to return. It did not. Pillars of stone slid upward around him, making the speed of the descent impossible to ignore. His face stayed intent, beautiful even in the hard concentration of the moment, but the strain had reached his shoulders. He tried once more. The machine continued down, and his gaze began to search beyond it for somewhere his own magic could take him.

The Moment to Let Go

Kaeryn releases one hand and looks toward the terrace as blue-green space folds behind him.

An amber lantern marked a clear patch of terrace inside the railing. Kaeryn held it in his sight while the failing hovercycle fell away from the line he had wanted. He had spent every possible moment trying to save its flight. Now he opened one hand. The choice was small in motion and immense in consequence. Blue-green light gathered behind him; space folded into a narrow seam, ready to carry him to the stone he could see. The machine remained beneath him for one last heartbeat.

An Empty Saddle

The riderless hovercycle continues descending as the teleportation seam fades above its empty saddle.

The saddle was empty. Above it, the blue-green seam tightened from a bright fold to a slender thread and vanished into the open air. Without Kaeryn’s weight or hands upon it, the hovercycle went on descending, its ochre light broken against the deep red clouds. The amber lamps of the terrace stayed high above. No impact came into view; the machine passed beyond sight, leaving only the widening space between it and the place where its rider had been.

The Speed He Carries

Kaeryn arrives inside the terrace railing, one boot touching stone while his body still carries forward momentum.

Kaeryn’s boot struck the terrace inside the railing. The teleportation had moved him across the gap, but it had carried the speed of the fall with him. He bent low, one foot sliding forward as his arms opened for balance. Strength and agility turned the violent arrival into a difficult landing rather than a collapse. Behind him, the blue-green seam drew closed with a last glimmer. Stone rushed beneath his next step; he followed its motion until he could bring himself to a stop.

After the Motion

Kaeryn rests one knee and one gloved hand on the terrace, looking toward the crimson clouds.

At last the movement left him. Kaeryn rested one knee and one gloved hand against the cool terrace, breathing slowly until the stone felt steady beneath his palm. Wind moved through his hair and across the exposed line of his arm. Beyond the railing, amber lights traced the suspended spans above the crimson clouds. He looked for the hovercycle, but it had vanished from view. His hand remained on the stone a moment longer before he lifted his gaze to the open air.
