BR9 / Lines, turns and shelter
The Blade Reaches
Long halls open into turning courts, and the streets between them belong to people who make, mend and live. Saevren comes to learn how to carry a weapon without letting it lead him. Alongside Søren, and with Thoden growing beyond familiar spaces, he finds that precision also depends on the room one leaves for another.

Leaving One Room, Finding Another
Leaving the Steps, crossing the sheltered span and finding room at the Quiet Turn.

The Blade Reaches
From an elevated gallery, long practice halls run towards broad turning courts. Workshops, homes and sheltered passages fill the spaces between them. Beyond the protective enclosures, dense red bromine surrounds this inhabited part of Brakhal.

What Remains on the Desk
The room at the Titan Steps is quiet enough for Saevren to hear the small movements of feathers behind him. Across from the bed, the letter still lies open on the desk. Before he leaves, there is one more thing to carry out of this room.

Everything He Carries
He folds the letter and slips it among the clothes in his familiar leather bag. The belongings are the same ones that have accompanied him through Brakhal; packing gives each its place again. Thoden watches from the perch as the room begins to look ready for someone else.

A Letter Leaves the Steps
At the correspondence counter beside the sheltered passage, Saevren passes the folded letter across with his left hand. It leaves his keeping here, at the Steps. Beyond the counter, the route continues, and the next part of his journey has yet to take shape.

Along the Sheltered Span
The bag hangs from one hand, the domed case from the other. Thoden keeps pace along the inner parapet, copper feathers bright against the stone. Ahead, the protected span carries them towards a different rhythm of buildings: long, straight halls interrupted by broad spaces to turn.

Where the Long Halls Meet
Where the long halls meet, the passage opens into the life around the courts. Workshops sit beneath occupied rooms; people cross between errands, work and a pause under sheltered trees. Saevren’s lessons will take place within a district that has many other reasons to keep moving.

A Door at the Quiet Turn
Tavelle welcomes them at the Quiet Turn and directs Saevren’s attention to the space prepared for his companion. Thoden is already investigating it from the floor. For now, the bags can wait by the entrance while they discover how this room will hold the two of them.

A Perch of His Own
Saevren sets the familiar bowl beside the base of the new perch. Above him, Thoden tests the bar with folded wings, shifting his weight until the position suits him. Tavelle watches without hurrying them. A few ordinary objects are enough to begin making the room their own.

The Work Around the Weapons
The people, fittings and daily tasks that support the first lesson.

The Armourers’ Street
On the armourers’ street, a seated resident waits while Nesra adjusts a fastening against his forearm. Saevren stops to watch the work before asking about practice clothing. The usefulness of a piece becomes clear in small decisions: where a strap lies, how it holds, what it allows to move.
View full image ↗
Made to Fit the Work
Nesra opens a bracer so that Saevren can see the padding beneath its hard surface. Tools and measuring pieces rest close to hand. He follows her explanation across the lining and the straps, learning what needs to be checked before a borrowed piece becomes part of his practice.

Cloth Before Steel
With one foot raised on a low support, Saevren bends his knee while Nesra checks the left greave. The practice clothing leaves his shoulders and abdomen free, but its edges must move cleanly with him. She makes another small adjustment before the fitting is done.

The Meal He Comes Back For
Back at the Quiet Turn, he sits on the edge of the bed and brings the bowl within Thoden’s reach. The bird settles to eat on the floor while Tavelle shares the quiet moment. There will be time for the courts after this familiar task is finished.

The Spear Courts
Drevak leads him along the protected side passage of the Spear Courts. Within the long nave, the lanes give each pair room to work and a clear way to return. From here, Saevren can see how a hall full of moving shafts still leaves a safe passage for everyday life.

Before the First Reach
His braid is gathered, his civil clothes put away. Before reaching for a spear, Saevren checks the fastening of the Ward beneath his clavicles. The borrowed equipment is ready; this last familiar gesture gives him a moment to settle himself before stepping into the lane.
View full image ↗
A Distance Marked in Steps
Drevak points to a line across the floor. Saevren places his feet and holds the padded spear in both hands, testing the distance before making an attempt. From this position, the point feels close to where he wants it. His return will have to fit within the same space.

The Distance He Can Keep
An interrupted reach, a considered return and a stranger in cobalt.

The Reach That Goes Too Far
The point travels forward, and Saevren follows it farther than his footing can support. His front arm lengthens; his torso leaves the steadiness beneath it. Drevak’s raised palm stops the attempt. For a moment, the gap between the reach he wanted and the stance he has is plainly visible.
View full image ↗
Feet Before the Point
On the next attempt, the reach is shorter. Saevren lets the step carry his body and keeps his hands closer, giving himself a position he can leave again. Drevak’s guiding hand stays low. The correction begins at the floor and travels through the rest of the movement.

Two Lines, One Passage
Another learner joins him for the passage. They draw their shafts towards the outside as they prepare to turn, each watching the space the other needs. Drevak guides them from the side. A movement that seemed simple alone asks for a different kind of attention when someone shares the lane.

The Pause Between Attempts
The spear rests securely in the nearby rack while Saevren sits and drinks. Around him, practice continues at its own pace. His shoulders ease as he catches his breath, and for a little while the useful thing to do is stay on the bench.
View full image ↗
A Shorter Step, a Steadier Return
Returning after the pause, he takes less distance with the step. His elbows remain bent and his torso settles over his feet as the spear comes back to guard. Drevak watches the return. This time, Saevren has left himself enough room to finish where he intended.
View full image ↗
The Point Back in Its Rack
He lowers the spear into its place in the rack and listens to Drevak’s last observation about the return. The lesson leaves him with a movement to remember and an implement to put away. His civil clothes wait nearby, and the rest of the district is still beyond the hall.

The Evening Arcade
Along the curved arcade, conversations gather beside food stalls and benches. Saevren stops at a counter, his long braid loose again, and lets the pace of the street replace the rhythm of the lane. Warm lamps follow the gallery into the inhabited stone above.

The Feathers He Knows
Thoden stands beside the bed while Saevren works gently through familiar feathers. His fingertips slow where the layers overlap, smoothing them without pulling. The room is ready for rest. After a day spent learning distance, this closeness asks for care he already knows how to give.

A Stranger in the Turning Court
On another visit to the turning court, a man in cobalt catches his attention. Søren keeps his blunt sword low while Veysha speaks, listening within the marked circle. Saevren watches from the gallery. For now, the stranger is someone else learning how to place his next movement.

A Different Kind of Precision
A shared lesson, an unruly welcome and a small gift that stays.

Names Before the Lesson
At the preparation bench, the stranger becomes Søren. With their names exchanged and the swords still resting in their support, both men turn towards Veysha. She gives them a shared exercise to begin with, and enough time to understand what each will be doing beside the other.
View full image ↗
The Line Beside the Blade
They begin slowly. Saevren tries a small step to the side of Søren’s blade while Veysha watches their footing and the distance between them. The swords remain apart. At this pace, there is time to notice which part of his body moves first, and which part still needs to follow.
View full image ↗
A Turn Arrives Late
His arms answer before his feet have taken him clear, and the turn arrives late. The attempt stops with both swords lowered. Veysha directs his attention downwards while Søren waits, leaving Saevren the space to see where his next correction must begin.
View full image ↗
The Shape He Cannot Rush
Søren’s projected plate holds its simple shape until he changes his support. Along the lower edge, its substance begins to loosen. Veysha signals a pause, and Saevren watches the concentration in Søren’s face. The shape will have to be released before he tries again.
View full image ↗
What the Other One Notices
Sitting together between attempts, they compare what each has noticed. Saevren gestures towards the floor, tracing the small point at which a step becomes too much. Søren listens and adds his own observation. Each has seen something from the side that the other could not easily see alone.
View full image ↗
Four Wings at the Courtyard Rail
At the sheltered courtyard rail, Thoden opens all four wings. Søren stays back with empty hands, allowing the bird to look at him without being asked to come closer. Beside the rail, Saevren watches the introduction unfold at Thoden’s chosen pace.
View full image ↗
A Welcome in Feathers
The greeting grows less solemn when a primary wing brushes across Søren’s hair. He bends willingly into the feathered disturbance, smiling as his carefully gathered bun loses some of its order. Saevren’s amusement is difficult to hide. Thoden keeps both feet on the rail throughout his mischief.

A Table Without a Contest
Over a simple meal, the repeated exercises become something they can laugh about. Saevren pauses with his spoon beside the bowl; Søren answers with bread still in his hand. Their attention no longer has to follow a blade, and the conversation has room to wander.
View full image ↗
A Gift Still Hidden
Saevren’s questions turn to the unusual projections, then to Søren’s rebellious style. Søren explains that the shapes fade; small ones can remain if a magical host continues to sustain them. He brings a hand to Saevren’s nearer ear and begins a little gift, keeping its shape hidden for another moment.

The Gift Revealed
When the hand moves away, black obsidian catches the warm light: a flat disc at the left lobe, three rings above, a small piece at the tragus. Saevren rests his chin on his hand and listens as Søren speaks. The gift will remain with him after this evening is over.

Room for What Is Growing
Wider wings, borrowed armour and the strength that practice makes visible.

More Room Beneath the Coverts
Over the following days, the familiar care begins to reveal how much room Thoden now needs. Saevren lifts the coverts gently, following the developed layers beneath them. The bird stands beside him at the floor, his head reaching towards Saevren’s middle, while the old arrangement of the room waits to be reconsidered.
View full image ↗
A Wider Resting Place
Saevren steadies one end of the wider bar while Tavelle adjusts its opposite collar. Thoden waits beside his bowl, close enough to watch but clear of their hands. The familiar perch will stay in the same place; its resting space is being made broad enough for the bird who uses it.
View full image ↗
The Landing He Chooses
Thoden chooses the courtyard rail and settles both feet upon it. His wings remain open for a moment, the larger main pair carrying the last of the approach while the lower pair helps him steady himself. Saevren watches with his hands down, allowing the landing to belong to the bird.

An Appetite to Plan For
A larger companion brings an appetite that needs planning. Saevren sets the food beside the water while Tavelle holds the portions put aside for the day. Thoden waits close by. Together they make another small adjustment to the daily work that keeps him comfortable.

Steel Fitted to a Living Body
Nesra works at the side fastening of the borrowed cuirass while Orren checks how its upper edge rests near Saevren’s shoulder. He holds his arms clear and lets them finish. The body within the armour must still be able to move, breathe and make use of the strength it carries.
View full image ↗
The Weight That Changes the Turn
The added weight changes the turn. Saevren stops with the sword low and the shield beside him, looking towards the footing Orren has indicated. What felt familiar without the plates now asks for another adjustment. He has time to make it before beginning again.
View full image ↗
A Shield with Room to See
He opens his stance and lowers the shield enough to keep Orren in view. From behind, the grip and the support of his arm are visible within the rim. There is still protection between them, but now Saevren can see the space into which he will need to move.

Leaving the Ring Breathing
The short combination ends, and Saevren reaches the recovery bench with his breath still working hard. Orren remains beside him with a quiet instruction. The equipment can rest while he does. Finishing the practice includes giving his body time to return from it.

Strength in the Turn
Back in the room, a small turn towards Thoden makes the change in Saevren’s back clear. His shoulders are rounder, the muscles beside his spine more defined, his waist still narrow beneath them. The strength accumulated through practice belongs to this ordinary movement as much as it does to the courts.

Holding the Line Together
A steadier shape, willing trust and a practice both can finish.

The Blade He Borrows
Søren pauses with the borrowed practice axe in his right hand. Veysha indicates its path from outside the weapon’s space, and he follows the correction before trying to complete the movement. The shorter handle asks for its own attention, even from hands already accustomed to a blade.
View full image ↗
A Return Without the Extra Step
Facing Søren again, Saevren completes the return and settles without the extra step. His feet hold the position, his torso remains centred, and the lowered sword leaves space between them. Veysha watches from beyond their line. The improvement is small enough to feel in the ending of the movement.
View full image ↗
The Shape Holds Through the Turn
This time, the edge of Søren’s simple projection stays whole through the turn. Saevren crosses a marked line at a distance while Veysha watches the exercise. For the moment they need, the shape remains steady, and both men have enough room to carry out their part.

The Call He Can Refuse
In the courtyard, Saevren opens his hand and waits. Thoden looks back from the rail, still comfortably perched, while Søren watches from behind. Nothing in the invitation requires an immediate answer. Saevren leaves the hand offered and allows his companion to choose.

Hands Behind the Armour
At Nesra’s bench, Saevren holds an opened bracer over a cloth while Søren sorts fittings into a tray. Nesra works the awl through a common strap on the block. For a while, their hands follow the slower work that makes the next practice possible.

Water Brought Back to Rest
Alone beside the basin, Saevren draws a small arc from the water already within it. The flow remains connected as he guides it back, sending returning ripples across the surface. The familiar exercise asks him to follow the movement all the way towards rest.

A Practice They Can Finish
The brief combination reaches its end with room left between them. Saevren and Søren settle their feet and lower their weapons while Orren and Veysha watch from the edge. Both are still attentive, still able to stop. For this practice, that is a finish they can share.

What He Takes Forward
Putting away the borrowed pieces, saying farewell and carrying the work forward.

What Belongs to the Courts
At the counter, the two swords lie side by side while Nesra checks the lining of a returned bracer. Saevren rests the shield on the floor beside the armour. The borrowed pieces belong to the courts; the habits learned in them will travel farther.

Until Another Turning
Søren lifts an empty hand in farewell, and Saevren answers with a small, amused smile. Around them, the arcade continues to carry other conversations. Their practice together has reached its pause, and neither needs to turn this moment into a promise about where they will meet again.

What He Writes of the Reaches
At the desk in the Quiet Turn, Saevren begins another letter to Aedrin. His left hand steadies the sheet while the pen moves beneath his right. The room is quiet around him, giving him time to consider what he wants to carry from these days into words.

The Courts After Practice
Practice has ended in the central court, but the surrounding galleries remain inhabited. Workshops close one by one while neighbours walk, sit and talk beneath lit windows. The halls have space for this quieter rhythm too, long after the last weapon has been put away.

Packed for a Colder Lesson
The new letter goes between the folded clothes in his old bag. While Saevren packs, Tavelle speaks with him about the route through the Resonant Wards towards the Pale Redoubts. Thoden waits on the floor beside them, much too large now for the place once occupied by an egg.

The Room They Learned to Use
For one last rest, the room holds the arrangement they have learned to use. Saevren closes his eyes beneath the cover while Thoden settles on the widened perch. The bags stand ready by the entrance. Everything that needed doing can wait until they rise.

Beyond the Turning Courts
Saevren walks on with a familiar weight in each hand and Thoden beside him on the stone. Behind them, the long halls and turning courts remain full of other lives. The next lesson lies beyond this sheltered passage; for now, they carry forward what they have learned here.
