BR9 / Lines, turns and shelter
The Blade Reaches · Field Guide
A closer look at the halls, clothing, tools and people of the Blade Reaches. These studies accompany Saevren’s journey through the region, from the first fitting to the strength and space that develop during his stay.
Places and tools
Lines, Turns and Shelter
The three centres, the Quiet Turn and the equipment shared by the courts.

Lines, Turns and Shelter
An architectural study of the relationship between straight practice lanes, turning spaces and shelter. Workshops and service areas support the courts, while protected passages connect them with the rooms where everyday life continues.

Reach Before Force
The Spear Courts give long weapons a clear direction and a considered return. Practice lanes sit beside protected circulation, with storage and observation kept outside the space needed by moving shafts.

Where the Line Turns
The Turning Blades organise practice around changes of angle. Broad circles, screened edges and separate working areas make room for blades, short weapons and controlled projection without confusing their paths with public circulation.

Room Within the Armour
The Armoured Rings bring fitting, movement and recovery close together. Low, substantial vaults enclose generous practice floors; nearby benches allow the weight and fit of borrowed equipment to be checked between attempts.

The Quiet Turn
The Quiet Turn offers a bed to the left, a desk beside the protected garden window to the right, and a place for Thoden at the back. This study shows the room before his growing wings call for a wider perch.

Tools for a Measured Reach
A padded spear, a blunt sword, a short practice axe and a round shield belong to the shared equipment of the courts. Their working surfaces, grips and fastenings are made to support repeated, measured practice.

Saevren
Early practice clothing and the strength visible later in the journey.

A Clear Line
Saevren’s first practice ensemble leaves shoulders and abdomen free, with forearm protection, greaves and an armoured skirt over fitted clothing. His long braid is gathered for movement, and the Clavicle Ward remains at the front. The study precedes Søren’s gift.

Weight in Motion
Borrowed armour adds a short cuirass and further protection to the same working base. Saevren’s shoulders remain free, and the Ward rests beneath the front padding. This early fitting study accompanies the later lessons on moving with additional weight.

Strength in the Turn
A posterior study of the strength that becomes visible later in Saevren’s stay: fuller shoulders, a defined upper back and a broad taper towards a narrow waist. These proportions accompany the later scenes without replacing his earlier appearance.

Søren
Between the courts and within focused practice.

Cobalt Between the Courts
Cobalt between the courts: Søren’s open, long-sleeved jacket, dark trousers and compact modern protections leave his chest and abdomen visible. His hair is gathered high, and a silver earring marks the left side.

The Shape He Keeps
For focused practice, Søren wears an open sleeveless cobalt vest with compact shoulder, elbow and forearm protection, reinforced legs and a supported back. The earring is removed for these sessions; the small insert remains at the left front.

Thoden
A larger juvenile stage and the structure beneath the coverts.

More Room for Four Wings
Thoden’s larger juvenile stage is shown beside Saevren and the familiar bowl. His head reaches towards the lower middle of Saevren’s abdomen when both stand on the floor, while four developed wings give him a much broader presence.

Four Roots, One Balance
Four wings, with separate roots and distinct work to do. The main pair has a slightly greater span for flight; the fully developed secondary pair assists control and can be used in an attack when needed. These views study the same juvenile stage.

People of the Reaches
The people who help the Blade Reaches work, teach and feel like home.

Drevak
Drevak teaches in the Spear Courts. His quiet attention falls on footing, shared distance and the movement that brings a weapon back. A slate tunic, narrow belt and low shoes suit the long hours spent beside the practice lanes.

Veysha
Veysha teaches in the Turning Blades, watching both the line of a blade and the balance beneath it. Her short mineral-plum jacket, charcoal reinforcements and close-fitting trousers allow her to move readily between the marked practice spaces.

Orren
Orren guides practice in the Armoured Rings. Worn iron plates and dark padding belong to his own working appearance. He gives attention to the body inside borrowed armour: how it sees, finds its support and returns from effort.

Nesra
Nesra works among the fittings, linings and straps of the armourers’ street. A short braid falls over her right shoulder, above a worn leather apron. Her practical knowledge helps borrowed equipment become useful to the person wearing it.

Tavelle
Tavelle hosts the Quiet Turn. A silver bun, grey-green dress and rust-coloured cloth apron are familiar parts of the room’s daily visits. She helps Saevren make space for Thoden as the bird outgrows the arrangements of his arrival.
